S A Shofiee Sylhet :
Varieties of early winter vegetables have started to arrive in the Sylhet’s kitchen markets over the last few weeks but the new produces were being sold at higher prices due to inadequate supply. Traders in the Sylhet yesterday said the winter vegetables including cauliflower, cabbage, bean, radish, and spinach just started to arrive in the markets and their prices remained high as supply was still not sufficient.
Abdul Ali, a vegetable vendor in the Subhanigat area of the Sylhet said: “It will take another month for the winter vegetables to dominate the market. Then the demand and prices for the vegetables that are available throughout the year will decline”.
“When the supply of winter vegetable increases, the consumers would be able to enjoy the items with reasonable prices,” he added.
“Last week I sold per kg of brinjal at Tk 70-75 but it has been sold at Tk 55-60 per kg this week. It is due to the new vegetables which are being sold to meet the customers thirst for changing their tastes. The new produces will be used as substitute for other vegetables which will surely reduce pressure on the limited vegetables available in Sylhet markets currently,” he added.
Kamal Hasan, a consumer, said: “I enjoy winter veggies. This is the best time to enjoy veggies. But this year, as new vegetables started arriving in the markets unlike previous years, we are to buy them at high prices. However, at least I can taste something new after long waiting. I bought today a
piece of cabbage weighing around 350 grams at Tk 30 as it would be burden for me to buy a cabbage weighing 1 kg.”
Traders in Bondorbazar wholesale market said the supply of winter vegetables including cauliflower, cabbage, bean, radish, and spinach had started to arrive in the market over the last weeks, but their prices remained high as supply was still not sufficient.
