With the advent of winter, varieties of seasonal vegetables have started arriving at different local and wholesale markets in Sylhet city and upazilas.
Huge bulk of vegetables is being transported everyday to different parts of the country including Dhaka from the region, local businessmen said.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Sylhet sources said Winter vegetables is being cultivated on 18,500 hectares of land in Sylhet division this year. The crops include gourd, sweet gourd, radish, bean, tomato, cucumber, red vegetable potato, pumpkin, cauliflower, eggplant and others.
Normally winter vegetables are cultivated in the Sylhet region from mid October to March. Accordingly, a good number of farmers are already busy on their croplands for farming the vegetables, which have an increased demand all over the 4 districts for the last few years.
In the recent years farmers in good number have brought huge lands under the vegetable farming on new areas like Lamakazi, Tukerbazar, Kamalbazar, Lalabazar and Rakhalganj of Sylhet sadar upazila and in Dakshin Surma upazila, The said crops are also produced on bulk areas in Golapganj upozila’s Dhakadakshin, Nimadol, Kotalpur, Lakshmipasha, Bagha etc.
Local farmers hope to bag around 2.5 lakh tonnes of vegetables this year that includes early winter items like cauliflower, cabbage, radish, carrot, turnip, tomato, leafy spinach and red spinach, among others.
Over 1,00,000 farmers and commoners from 50 villages have been involved in cultivation and sales of different types of vegetables in the region, the sources concerned informed.
A farmer of Mohammedpur village under Dakshin Surma upazila Anwar Hossain said he spent about Tk 750 for cultivating cauliflowers in one decimal of land and got 1.5 to 2 maunds of crops. He remained optimistic about enjoying a bumper production of cauliflower on his small piece of land.
The price of cauliflower in wholesale markets at present ranges between Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,400 per maund with the farmers making a profit of Tk 450 to Tk 550 for cultivating early winter vegetables in every decimal of land, he added.
A local trader in the city, Kolim Ullha said some 15 to 20 vegetables-laden lorries are going to the capital and other towns everyday to supply the fresh items. The vegetable items are being sold at a fair price in different local and wholesale markets in the city as well as the upazila markets. Each truck can carry up to 5,000 of long gourds.
On an average, some 80,000 of gourds are being sent everyday to different parts of the country including Dhaka, he added.
Deputy Director of Sylhet DAE said the farmers of different upazilas are very happy as they are getting fair vegetable price at the markets following bumper production this season.
