The traders of winter clothes in the Sylhet district are in much trouble as their business is suffering serious setback due to continuous blockades.
Traders of warm clothes of the city and its adjacent areas under the district started their business with hope to earn windfall profit by selling huge quantities of clothes during this winter season but on account of prolonged blockades their hopes got shattered.
Talking to a number of winter clothes traders expressed their apprehension saying that they invested huge amount of money this season for this business but are facing huge losses everyday due to continuous blockades. Many of them are also worried about repaying their dues. They called upon all political parties to give up destructive political programmes like shutdown or blockades to ensure a business friendly environment.
Visiting different markets this correspondent found most of the clothes traders sitting almost idle waiting for customers.
Expressing frustration and resentment a number of traders told that they are incurring huge losses this season owing to consecutive blockades and shutdown. They also expressed their disgruntlement over poor sales even in peak season.
Traders at of Hasan market, Modhubon Super market, London mansion, Shukria market, Blue water and Al Hamra Shopping City in the Sylhet city told that they are facing serious problem in running their business as sale has declined to a great extent owing to frequent blockades.
Ashraf, a winter clothes trader at Hasan market in the City told that his business has been affected a lot this season by political turmoil. He said before blockade his per day sale was around Tk 12,000 to 15,000 but presently it has come down to only Tk 1500 to Tk 2000 a day “Our political parties only think about themselves, they never think about common people like us”, he added.
Lutfar Rahman another winter clothes seller at a makeshift shop at Surovi Uddan gate area told that their business has decreased drastically because of frequent blockades. During normal situation his daily sale was Tk 1500 to Tk 2000 but at present it is only Tk 300 to Tk 500, he said. “If the situation continues how will we survive”, he lamented.
Due to frequent blockades retailers from different upazilas are facing difficulty in coming to the city, which has also left adverse impact on the wholesale business, traders alleged.
