West Indies Women’s Cricket team clinched the championship title of the ICC World Women’s Twenty20 defeating Australia Women’s Cricket team by eight wickets in the final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India on Sunday.
Chasing Australia’s fighting total of 148 for the loss of five wickets in the allotted 20 overs, West Indies sailed home making 149 for the loss of two wickets with three balls remaining.
West Indies made a solid foundation as HK Mathews and SR Taylor, the two openers of the Caribbean’s contributed together 120 runs before Mathews was caught at the mid-wicket by AJ Blackwell off KM Beams.
Mathews notched up a terrific 66. Her 45-ball innings was studded with six fours and three sixes. Mathews was adjudged the Player of the Match for her outstanding batting performance.
SR Taylor made a superb 59 from 57 balls hitting six fours before she was caught at the point by JL Jonassen off RM Farrell when West Indies’ score was 144 for the loss of two wickets. SR Taylor was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for her consistent performance.
DJS Dottin remained unbeaten with 18. She hit two fours in her 12-ball innings.
KM Beams and RM Farrell got one wicket each conceding 27 and 35 runs respectively.
Earlier, Australia had an unsteady start as they lost their opener AJ Healy (4) when Australia’s score was 15.
After dismissal of Healy, EJ Villiani and MM Lanning rescued their team from early debacle contributing together 77 runs for the second wicket partnership before Villiani was caught by SR Taylor off DJS Dottin when Australia’s score was 92 for the loss of two wickets.
Villiani hammered a stormy 52. Her 37-ball innings was laced with nine fours.
Then MM Lanning and FA Perry built another notable partnership. They put on together 42 runs in the third wicket stand before Lanning was trapped leg before wicket by A Mohammed when Australia’s total was 134 for the loss of three wickets.
Lanning hit a captain’s knock of 52. Her 49-ball knock was studded with eight fours.
FA Perry made 28 from 23 balls featuring two sixes before she was trapped leg before wicket by DJS Dottin when Australia’s score was 147 for the loss of four wickets.
Dottin bagged a pair of wickets at the cost of 33 runs while HK Mathews and A Mohammad took one wicket each for 13 and 19 runs respectively.
