The wild elephant, stranded in Bangladesh for more than a month by floods, was tranquilised again on Sunday morning.
The elephant was rescued recently and named as Bangabahadur.
Wildlife inspector of the Bangladesh Forest Department Ashim Kumar Mallick said, Bangabahadur surfaced from one of the wetlands in the area before moving into an open field at Koyra village in Sharishabari upazila in Jamalpur district around 7:00am.
At about 5:00am, the elephant broke off its shackles, locals said.
A 17-member rescue team of the Bangladesh Forest Department started following the elephant’s tracks soon after it started roaming around, said Mustafizur Rahman, Assistant Veterinary Surgeon of Bangabandhu Safari Park, Cox’s Bazar.
The elephant was tranquilised around 10:00am and later tied to a mango tree in the village, said Mustafizur Rahman.
Two more elephants are likely to be brought from Bangabandhu Safari Park in Gazipur today (Monday) in order to move the elephant to a truck, Tapan Kumar Dey, Chief Executive of Nature Conservation Society said.
The rescue team is planning to lift the elephant into a truck by Monday noon and shift it to Bangabandhu Safari Park in Gazipur, Tapan said.
Earlier on August 11, the elephant was tranquilised and pulled out of water in an unconscious state, by the villagers.
On June 28, the elephant was swept away with the floodwater of the trans-boundary Brahmaputra River from Assam of India into Kurigram district at Roumari border.
It wondered across Bogra, Sirajganj, finally into Dewanganj of Jamalpur district along the Brahmaputra and the Jamuna rivers for about one and half months, looking for shelter and food while struggling against the floodwater.
On August 3, a three-member Indian team came to Bangladesh to give support to a 17-member Bangladeshi team for the rescue of the elephant.
