A number of dwellers in Madhya Teligati area under Aranghata police station in Khulna city kept a woman confined for hours on Thursday and handed over her to the police for taking bribe from people assuring them to give job in Khulna University of Engineering and Technology.
The woman Dilara Jahan Payel, 30, is the wife of KUET vice-chancellor’s private secretary Saifullah Palash.
Aranghata police station officer-in-charge Kazi Rezaul Karim told media that on information that locals of Madhya Teligati area caught Payel and kept her confined in a house they went to the spot.
Later they came to know that she had taken money from a number of people of the area assuring them with a job.
He said that they then rescued Payel from the area and took her to their custody in the evening.
OC Rezaul said that they asked the people to lodge a case if they had any complaint against her.
The amount Payel collected from the locals would stand about Tk one crore, said a guard of the university, who is also a victim.
But as the victims did not get the promised job, they wanted their money back but Payel failed to pay them, he said, adding that the locals caught her at about 3:00 pm on Thursday. An official of the university said that they have recently received verbal allegations from the locals, including the lower class employees of the university, against Payel.
Neither the KUET vice-chancellor Professor Quazi Sazzad Hossain nor registrar GM Shahidul Alam could be reached for comments despite several attempts.
KUET public relations assistant director Monoj Kumar Majumder told New Age that they were yet to get any such allegation formally.
