A housewife was allegedly poisoned to death by her husband and in-laws over dowry in the village of Shihipasha, in Agailjhara upazila of Barisal on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Lima Akter, wife of Jasim Hawladar of Shihipasha.
Family members of the victim said Lima, daughter of Mujam Sardar of
Baniashuri village in Gournadi upazila of the district, and Jasim tied the knot just six weeks back.
As is the custom, Lima’s family rewarded their daughter’s eager suitor with cash and golden ornaments to Jasim and blessing the marriage. But just a few days into married life together, Jasim started torturing his wife regularly on the pretext of more dowry, allege Lima’s family members.
On Monday afternoon, it is learned that Jasim and his family members tortured Lima again, but she this time refused to budge. At one stage, Jasim and his family literally forced her to stop. Later, she was whisked off to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where duty doctors declared her dead.
