Salma Akhter, wife of panel mayor of Benapole Pourashava, Tariqul Alam Tuhin, alleged on Saturday that Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is involved in abduction of her husband from Dhaka’s Sher-e- Bangla Nagar area last year.
There is no progress in the investigation of the case though 15 months have passed since the incident of abduction. The abduction took place on March 7 , 2013 from in front of NAM Bhavan, Sher-e- Bangla Nagar, a Bengali daily said in a report.
A case was filed with Sher-e- Bangla Nagar police, by Sumon Mahmud, a cousin of Tuhin five days after the abduction. DB police was given the charge of investigation of the matter three months after the case was filed.
Tuhin was abducted immediately after he came out of the NAM flat of Sheikh Afil Uddin, MP of Jessore- 1. The case is now under investigation of Human Trafficking prevention team of DB.
Referring to the allegation against RAB, Tuhin’s wife Salma Akhter said a clash took place between supporters of Benapole Poura Mayor Ashraful Alam and Tuhin four days before the abduction. RAB men visited Tuhin’s house on
March 3 late night looking for him, she said adding the elite force also used language of threats against Tuhin. RAB men visited their house for the second time on March 5. Having failed to find him RAB people said by remaining out of the house Tuhin would not be able to survive, she said in an emotional voice.
An amount of Tk. 10 lakh was demanded as ransom for Tuhin’s release from his phone, she recalled. But she agreed to send Tk. five lakh which was sent through bKash. Two days later another phone call was made from his phone for Tk. five lakh, she said. After a hard bargain an amount of Tk. three lakh was sent but Tuhin did not return, she said adding since then his phone remains switched off.
Assistant Commissioner of DB Tejgaon office Abul Kashem said they were aware of the fact that RAB men had been to Tuhin’s house. Regarding the progress of the case ,he said several investigation officers of the case have already been changed.
Those who have visited the NAM flat to meet Tuhin, are in the suspected list, he said. He further said that they were aware that the kidnappers have taken money from Mrs Salma Akhtar threatening to kill Tuhin unless the money was paid. No trace however, could be made of the telephone number which the abductors used for receiving the ransom money, he said.
RAB -6 CO Masudur Rahman however, refuted the allegation of Salma. He however, said as allegation has been made against RAB, they would investigate the matter.
There is a tendency to blame RAB whenever there is any incident of abduction, he said.
