Staff Reporter :The gruesome killing of Rajshahi University [RU] teacher Prof AKM Shafiul Islam has ignited widespread protests at varsity and other educational institutions across the country.Apart from RU, the teachers, students and general staff of Dhaka University [DU], Jahangirnagar University [JU], Jagannath University [JnU] brought out processions, staged human chains and released statements, demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers on Monday.Meanwhile, a Rajshahi court yesterday fixed Tuesday [today] to hear the 10-day remand prayer to interrogate the 11 persons who have been shown arrested over the murder of Shafiul Islam.Police produced them before the court of Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate on Monday afternoon and sought a 10-day remand to interrogate them, Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Motihar police station said.”The court has ordered the 11 to send to jail,” the OC added.Shafiul Islam, Professor of Sociology Department at the university, died after being hacked by assailants on Saturday afternoon.Our Rajshahi Correspondent said the police so far have arrested 45 persons in suspicion of involvement in the murder. Of them, there is a female student of Sociology Department. Besides, Humayun Ahmed, the principal ofIslamia Degree College, is a leader of Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir and another teacher of the same college Fazlul Haque are also among the arrestees.The others are Mosharraf Hossain, Abdullah Al Mahamud, Mashiur Rahman, Hasibur Rahman, Jinnat Ali, Saif Uddin, Rezaul Karim, Sagar and Arif.In this backdrop, the Commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police [RMP] Barrister Mahbubur Rahman has been transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police [DMP], jus 48 hours after the killing of Prof Shafiul.The decision came amid strong protests demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers of RU teacher.According to a notification of the Home Ministry, Mahbubur Rahman will be replaced by Additional Commissioner of D MP Mohamamd Samsuddin.The RU Teachers’ Association have declared boycott of all classes and examinations on Monday and Tuesday in protest against the murder. No classes and examinations were held yesterday as RUTA declared boycotting class-exams. However, admission process for the students of 2014-2015 sessions was normal, said RU Registrar Prof Entajul Haque.Meanwhile, Rajshahi University Teachers’ Association [RUTA], Dhaka University Teachers Association [DUTA] and students of Dhaka University and some other organisations staged demonstrations on their respective campuses demanding the arrest and punishment of the killers.The RU teachers also boycotted classes and exams on Sunday protesting the murder. All the teachers, students and general staff wore black badges yesterday and the seven-day programme will continue. The Duta yesterday formed a human chain in front of Aparajeyo Bangla on the campus protesting the killing of Prof AKM Shafiul Islam and demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers.Addressing the human chain, Duta president Prof Dr Farid Uddin Ahmed said militants kill those people who have the dream to build a non-communal Bangladesh.He urged the government to eliminate militancy form the country to build a non-communal Bangladesh.Former VC of Jahangirnagar University Prof Dr Anwar Hossain, Dean of Earth and Environmental Sciences Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, Former dean of Arts faculty Prof Dr Sadrul Amin, among others, took part in the human chain.Bangladesh Chhatra League [BCL] brought out a procession on the DU Campus protesting the killing of the RU teacher and that marched the important points of the campus and held a brief rally at the altar of Oparajyia Bangla at the noon.On the other hand, the BCL RU brought a peocession and put blockade on Dhaka-Rajshahi highway yesterday noon for several hours.
