Four ex-Presidents of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), including Dr Kamal Hossain and Barrister Mainul Hosein, in a letter wanted to know who the current President of the organization is.
They issued the letter to the executive committee of the SCBA recently. The other two are Barrister Amir-ul Islam and Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud.
In the letter they said lawyer Abdul Matin Khasru who was elected the President for the sessions of 2021-2022 died on April 14 last year. His term as President of the bar was from April 1 last year to March 31 this year. Now the question is who the President is in this situation, they asked in the letter.
The former leaders also questioned in the letter as to why the names of the disqualified persons have been included in the voter-list prepared for the election of the 2022-2023 sessions, and how did they (executive committee) get the mandate (power) of counting the votes of the members electronically in the upcoming election.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, incumbent Secretary of the SCBA, on Thursday acknowledged that they had received the letter from the former leaders. He said, “We have received a letter and will take decision soon.”
Despite having political differences, they have been united to protect the dignity of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the welfare of its members, also read the letter.
The four senior lawyers have proposed for the formation of an ad hoc committee immediately to bring correction into issues related to the illegal and unconstitutional activities of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
Their letter also includes a proposal to prepare a voter-list free from illegal voters for the purpose of holding a free and fair election.
After the death of lawyer Abdul Matin Khasru who was elected the President of the SCBA for the sessions of 2021-2022, the bar called a special general meeting. In that meeting, Pro-Awami League lawyers of the SCBA announced the name of Attorney General AM Amin Uddin as the new President, however, the pro-BNP lawyers rejected the decision.
