M M Jasim :
Thousands of students are suffering tremendously due to the Education Ministry’s whimsical decision of launching online admission system in colleges under Higher Secondary courses without any study.
The much advertised online admission system has carried a number of serious errors. As for example, science students have been given commerce subjects and many boys students have been sent to girls’ college.
A good number of high-scoring students’ names were not selected for admission in the first merit list. Again, hundreds of students have been selected for admission in such colleges to which they don’t have qualification marks.
Meanwhile, several hundred students and guardians
have been running between board offices and colleges because of erroneous merit list. But the ministry has asked guardians to admit their sons and daughters as per list.
The ministry has also asked the college authorities to admit the students as per the direction of the ministry though the process was wrong. Even the ministry forced the science colleges to admit commerce students and vice-verse, which created unhappy situation.
The Government Science College can admit science students only, but the ministry has sent two hundred commerce students there for admission. The college authorities were forced to admit and start classes. The ministry also told the college that it would help to continue academic activities.
Government Science College Principal Habibur Rahman said that the ministry had assured them of adequate teachers to take the classes of Commerce Group students.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said that the students would be admitted there this year only. There will be no admission next year.
The ministry officials said that it was the ministry’s mistake. To hide the mistake, the bosses of the ministry took some initiatives, which was not positive.
Again, the names of fake colleges on the merit list has made future of many students uncertain.
Fifty-two students went to Azimpur UU Laboratory College after getting their names from the ministry’s website. They searched the location of the college, but failed. A private university is rather running activities at the same place.
They later went to Dhaka Board, but they got no solution. Iqbal Hossain (Roll No-176939) and Saiful Islam (Roll No-400263) hailed from Comilla told The New Nation that they had been deceived. It was unexpected and shameful.
Kalachandpur High School in Gulshan, a college for the female students, has 38 seats. According to the new admission results, the ministry assigned 22 boy students for admission there. Now the teachers and guardians of the college expressed their dissatisfaction over the ministry’s decision.
The ministry selected a student to admit there. At the same time, 88 students applied for Mohammadpur Preparatory School and College, but the ministry did not select anyone though there are 50 seats in the college.
Mohammadpur Preparatory School and College teachers Dilruba Begum and Nazma Parvin said the college authorities informed the ministry about the peculiar situation.
Over 62,000 high-scoring students were not on the first merit list as they named only top colleges in their list of choices, confirmed a Dhaka education board official. The official further admitted errors in the case of another 50,000 students, who would also not be able to attend classes on the first day.
For such errors, most colleges failed to start higher secondary certificate classes on the first day of academic calendar, as the merit list contains numerous flaws.
Education Ministry College Section Deputy Secretary Subodh Chandra Dhali admitted that only a few colleges began classes while the majority had failed, attributing the cause to Ramadan, beside the errors in the computerised data processing system.
The education boards published the first merit list for enrolment in colleges on Monday after missing three deadlines because of errors in the computerised data processing system. The failure had pushed the start of admissions to July 2 from June 30.
Following the new admission guidelines, students had named five colleges as preference in the online application and the education board made the final selection.
This year, 11.57 lakh students applied for admission, and the government uploaded the first lists of over 10.93 lakh students on www.xiclassadmission.gov.bd late Sunday.
Authorities of Ideal School and College, Dhaka City College, Monipur School and College, Government Science College, Mohammadpur Central University College said they could not complete the admission process, but held orientation classes on the first day.
Meanwhile, many colleges are reportedly charging admission fees up to five times higher than the fees fixed by the government.
The second merit list is set to be announced on July 6, based on the availability of seats in colleges.
Besides, students who are not named in either merit list, will be allowed to register with colleges through a release slip.
