BANGABANDHU Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University’s Vice-Chancellor Khondoker Md Nasiruddin has resigned. Education Minister Dipu Moni said that she received the resignation letter from the VC on Monday evening. Earlier, the probe committee formed by University Grants Commission on Sunday recommended withdrawing the VC of BSMRSTU on the ground of autocratic behaviour, irregularities, corruption and moral degradation. At last, we have seen UGC has revealed the fact with utter care in the line of public sentiment and suggested for removal of the politically loyal VC. Amid scandals of corruption and other irregularities of the University Administrations in DU, JU, IUK, RU and CU; the UGC’s recommendation about BSMRSTU is appreciating.
The embattling VC had been staying on the campus during the whole period of the student unrest before leaving the campus under police protection on Sunday evening. The five-member UGC committee submitted the probe report to the UGC Chairman and Education Ministry. The probe body’s recommendations came following the 12th straight day agitation of BSMRSTU students in Gopalganj demanding the VC’s removal for his alleged corruption and other unlawful activities. The committee in its report said that all allegations against the VC were proved, he must be removed and legal action should be taken against him.
The BSMRSTU authorities on September 21 closed the University till October 3 but the students were continuing their agitation programme ignoring the closure notice. On September 23 the Education Ministry sent a letter to the UGC for forming a committee to examine the situation at the University. Following the directive, the UGC formed the five-member committee on September 24. Three assistant proctors of the university have stepped down supporting the students’ agitation and protesting the role of the University Authorities after the students were attacked on September 21 by a group of hooligans allegedly backed by the VC.
We do urge the Education Ministry to take legal action against the accused person and appoint a genuine teacher as the VC of BSMRSTU, whom knowledge, administrative capacity and honesty are beyond any doubt. Please don’t appoint politically loyal stooges in the responsible post of VCs to destroy academic atmosphere of the universities.
