Wheat harvest progressing fast in Gaibandha

Harvest of wheat, one of the high value crops, has been progressing fast in all the seven upazilas of the district during the current season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said a total of 3,621 hectares of land were brought under wheat farming this year with the production target of 11,225 tonnes.
Of the total, some 142 hectares of land were brought under the farming in Sadar upazila, 332 hectares in Sadullapur upazila, 36 in Palashbari upazila, 527 in Gobindaganj upazila, 1,345 in Sundarganj upazila, 599 in Shaghata upazila and 640 in Phulchhari upazila.
Now, all the farmers of the district are passing their busy time to harvest the variety and they are getting desired output against the crop.
Apart from this, the DAE had taken up a programme for preservation of wheat at farmers’ level through setting up demonstration plots at their land.
Talking to the BSS, deputy director of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin said initiatives had been taken to ensure seed, fertilizer, pesticides and other agri-inputs to the farmers to boost production of wheat this season.
In reply to a query, the DD said about 65 percent harvest had already been completed in the district till March 26 and the rest would be finished within next seven days.
