UNB, Dhaka :
Gas production started on Sunday from the newly drilled well No.5 of the Bakhrabad gas field.
Officials of Bangladesh Exploration and Production Company Ltd (Bapex), which conducted the drilling after taking over its charge as work-over well, said the country will get 5 million cubic feet gas per day (mmcfd) from the well.
“We hope, the well will continue production at this range without using any compressor,” Bapex managing director Mahbub Sarwar told UNB.
He informed that production from the new well will immediately go to the national grid and mainly the gas-starved Chittagong region will be its main beneficiary.
With the new production, the gas production of the Bakhrabad gas field has increased to 39 mmcfd from existing capacity of 34 mmcfd.
The Bapex has been engaged in the drilling of the well at the Bakhrabad field for more than three months and its local engineers made the breakthrough after relentless efforts.
Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL), a subsidiary of the state-owned Petrobangla has been operating the Bakhrabad gas field.
At present, the country’s 22 gas fields have been producing 2277.4 mmcfd gas against a demand of more than 2700 mmcfd.
