A weeklong national awareness campaign titled ‘Week of the Married Girl Child’ kicked off in the city on Thursday.
Initiatives for Married Adolescent Girls’ Empowerment (IMAGE) organised the campaign ahead of the Universal Children’s Day that falls on November 20. The campaign was inaugurated at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club.
IMAGE is a joint platform of five social, non-governmental and children
and women rights organisations-Terre des Hommes Netherland, RedOrange Media and Communication Ltd, Terre des Hommes-Lausanne and Pollisree.
IMAGE project director Farhana Jesmine Hasan, managing director of RedOrange Media & Communications Arnob Chakrabarty, country director of Terre des Hommes Netherlands Mahmudul Kabir, national coordinator for Child Protection with Terre des Hommes Lausanne Morium Nessa, chief executive of SKS Foundation Rassel Ahmed Liton , executive director of Pollisree Shamim Ara Begum and director of Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum (BSAF) Abdus Shahid Mahmood were, among others, present at the press conference.
Addressing on the occasion, Arnob Chakrabarty said 29 percent of the girls are being married before 15 years of age while 65 percent before reaching 18 in Bangladesh which is a social menace.
He said, all have to work together to bring an end to this trend and make people aware of the bad effects of early marriage.
The RedOrange Media & Communications MD also said Bangladesh cannot become a developed country by 2041 leaving these girls uneducated and underpowered.
