Police have arrested 343 teenagers detained in Dhaka’s Hatirjheel area with week-long raid.
Police detained them over the public recreation space for creating nuisance and harassment in week-long raids, said a press release of police headquarters.
As the most of the accused were minors, police handed them over to their parents.
Of the detainees, 71 were taken in police custody and actions were taken against them as per the Dhaka Metropolitan Ordinance for creating nuisance in
public place. Meanwhile, three were taken custody for filed case against them, said the police headquarters Assistant Inspector General for media Sohel Rana.
Rests of the teenager were conditionally handed over to their parents, he added.
He also said that they were carrying out the drive after a complaint was posted on police Facebook page on January 26 that visitors were being harassed by some teenagers in the Hatirjheel area.
Police, local and victims said that the teenagers were teasing visitors, especially women, creating chaos, riding motorcycle with high speed and loud motorcycle horn which caused panic among visitors.
The gangs had deadly clashes in the area also. A teenager was stabbed to death and another injured in the area in February, 2020.
Police carried out similar drives in September 2019 to check such harassment and over 100 were detained then.
