Met office says weather throughout May is going to be topsy-turvy with storm, heat waves, flash floods and tropical cyclone in Bangladesh.
One or two extreme heat waves may hit north and north-western zone while two or three mild heat
waves may sweep through other parts of the country during this month. Bangladesh Meteorological Department Shamsuddin Ahmed narrated the forecast on Wednesday.
Mild heat wave occurs when mercury rises to 36-38 degrees Celsius while medium heat wave is marked with temperature around 40 degrees Celsius.
Severe heat wave is when temperature goes up than 40 degrees Celsius. Water level in rivers will remain stable but flash floods may occur at some places in north, north-east and south-east zones due to downpour and landslides.
Depression in the Bay of Bengal may turn into a tropical cyclone, met office predicts.
North, north-east and middle part of the country may see thunderstorms for two to three days. Other parts will witness mild or medium thunderstorms. Bangladesh experienced rainfall at double than the usual rate in April. Heavy rainfall and hailstorms were reported from some parts.
Starting on Apr 1, storms continued from for five days in the south-east parts. Other parts of the country witnessed storms from April 19-24. Mild heat waves were reported from Rajshahi, Khulna and Dhaka divisions in between April 10 and 14 while from Rajshahi and Khulna divisions witnessed the heat waves once again from Apr 26-29. Highest temperature was recorded on Apr 3 in Chuadanga when mercury rose to 38.5 degrees Celsius. On April 15, depression over east-central Bay of Bengal turned into tropical cyclone ‘Maarutha.’ It weakened after landfall in Myanmar.
