Weather forecast project costs Tk 502 crore

The Ministry of Defence has taken a project named “Information Services and Strengthening Forecast System (Component-A) Project” for getting weather forecast at an estimated cost of Tk 502 crore.
Of the total cost the World Bank will provide Tk 462.93 crore while Tk 57.22 crore will be financed by Bangladesh govt.
The project will be implemented under the supervision of “Bangladesh Weather and Climate Services Regional Project”.
Information was disclosed at a meeting Chaired by Mohammad Shubid Ali Bhuiyan of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Defence held at the Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday (December 6).
The meeting stated that the project is expected to complete by June, 2021. The project was launched officially in July, 2017 after getting approval by the ECNEC.
Through the project, automatic agro-meteorological instruments will be installed in 200 upazilas, 65 automatic rain gauges (also known as an udometer, pluviometer, or an ombrometer) will be installed in WASA offices in four divisional cities and automatic rain gauges will be installed in 35 traditional observatories.
The standing committee said, this type of instrument should have procured which will be useful for the people.
Parliamentary secretariat in a press release said, the committee recommended that the observation would have continued to modernization the project instrument.
Moreover, modern weather instrument will be installed at Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet airports which will be helped to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) to maintain aircraft’s safely take off and landing.
Besides, 11 international standard portable hydrogen gas generators will be set up at high sky to collect meteorological data. Global Telecommunication Switching System will be modernised.
Advisory service and instrument procurement cooperation will be given to the University of Dhaka for opening the Meteorological Department also.
