MEDIA report said criminals from Indian side of the border supplied the arms and ammunition used in attack on the Holy Artisan Café in Gulshan on July 1 this year. By interrogating four militants arrested on Wednesday by law enforcers in the city, police made the disclosure to Media saying the explosive entered Bangladesh through Chapainawabganj border. It surprises many to know that when cattle traders on the border can’t escape the vigilance of Indian security forces as they instantly open fire on them and kill them, how traffickers of explosives and fire arms can easily sneak into Bangladesh with such weapons. Only few days back, police arrested an Indian weapon trafficker from Gabtoli bus terminal with several firearms. On questioning he confessed that he runs trafficking of weapon and explosives regularly from across the border. He comes from 24-Parganas District in West Bengal opposite to Bangladesh border.
Police disclosure said “Neo JMB” leaders in Bangladesh place demand for arms, ammunition and grenade-making materials to JMB men in India, who include some Bangladeshi militants hiding there. Most arms and explosive materials were transported to Dhaka in hidden baskets of mangoes and other fruits. As per police the recovery of a 9mm pistol and 787 detonators, the main ingredient of handmade grenades from the possession of the newly arrested militants suggest that they were planning new attack. The weapons also arrive from across the border.
As we know that the cross border connection of militants and weapon supply to Bangladesh is known to Intelligence and Security personnel on both sides of the border. Arrest of some outfits in West Bengal’s Bardhaman district and in Assam last year also confirmed the existence of the network. There is no secret that most explosive supply came from India for use in militants’ attacks in Bangladesh over the past years. But what is adding to our concern is that when law enforcers in Bangladesh are showing success in destroying the militants, they remain largely in tact in Indian side of the border putting our security at risk every time. They must be destroyed at source. When we know that the bullets and explosives for Gulshan attack came from Indian side of the border that killed so many people including 20 foreigners, many feel utter remorse from such disclosure.
We believe Indian total cooperation is essential to curb militancy in Bangladesh. There is no doubt India is doing its part but more serious efforts are needed to seal the border and help us to eliminate the menace of militant attacks. In our view Indian government must quickly identify all Bangladeshi outfits living in India and send them back to Bangladesh. Indian nationals involved in weapons trafficking should similarly be sternly dealt with. We made the Indian eastern border secure, India must do it for us now.
