MEMBERS of Bangladesh Armed Forces have started polls duty across the country from Monday. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said army was deployed at country’s 389 upazilas. Besides, members of Bangladesh Navy and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed respectively at eighteen coastal and eighty-seven bordering upazilas. A total of 1,016 platoons of BGB forces were deployed across the country earlier on December 18. Besides, members of the Rapid Action Battalion and the Armed Police Battalion will be deployed as mobile and striking forces from December 26 to January 2. Home Ministry sources said the security forces’ members will be stationed at different “nodal points” and convenient places in every district, upazila and metropolitan area.
We do congratulate the Election Commission for deployment of Armed Forces which was also demanded by the opposition political parties. It comes following widespread violence and attacks on several candidates in different constituencies. In the latest incident, two persons were killed and several others injured when miscreants sprayed bullets indiscriminately on local people after torching election camps in Khagrachhari hill district yesterday.
It’s a normal attitude of our majority people that they keep trust on Armed Forces for their impartial role when the country goes through a crisis. In that case, we think, the Commission has able to realize the pulse of common people, which is appreciating. CEC KM Nurul Huda said the Armed Forces’ members would take every possible measure to maintain law and order during the polls.
Jatiya Oikyafront Convenor Dr Kamal Hossain has said they hope this deployment will create a congenial electoral environment. He also expected that the Armed Forces will not stand against the interest of people or seek to implement the agenda of an individual or a group of people. On the other hand, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir welcomed the decision and said: “We sincerely believe an atmosphere for a fair and neutral election will be created for the deployment of army.”
The Commission is committed to holding the upcoming polls in a free, fair, peaceful and impartial manner. No doubt, holding of such an election largely depends on the proper role of law enforcement agencies. We hope, the patriotic Armed Forces’ members will do their best without any partiality to hold the election in a violence-free and peaceful manner.
