We need such police constable for human face of police

AMONGST all dismal news of the country and its law enforcers, one wonderful piece of news stood out to show how one brave traffic constable instantly risked his life on Monday to save a schoolboy from downing. What started as a normal day for the constable quickly escalated into a lifesaving experience. The constable has done a great job when many coward onlookers at the spot were of no help to the drowning boy. We applaud his feat and needless to say that Chittagong Metropolitan Police have rightly decided to reward him for the bravery. It must be example to others.
The story said the eight-year boy accidentally fell into a canal in Chittagong city as he was going to school in the morning. On the way to work, the traffic constable saw the crowd and when he realized what was happening, he jumped into the 25-feet-deep water full of filth without a second thought and rescued the child who was just showing one of his hands that time. The constable said he felt great and he wanted people to pray for him so that he could help others throughout his life.
The constable’s actions actually surpass that of mere duties imposed on him by law as his curiosity and quick reaction helped save a young life. He proved to be honest and brave unlike others crowding the scene. It is deeply disturbing how passersby (who observed the child’s fall in the canal) did not come forward to lend a hand in rescuing a child and instead chose to watch it. This is a chilling example of some people’s apathy and moral degradation in society where self-interest holds more power than selflessness when in comes to the life of innocents.
The real truth is that if the constable had not jumped in to save the child, the boy would have surely died. He saved the family from the pains of losing their son. His acts showed that humanity still exists in many of us and thus we salute the traffic constable and hope he makes similar heartfelt efforts in making people’s lives better. We also hope that other law enforcers will take him as a source of inspiration to do good deeds to people throughout the country breaking the fear about police in our time. Similarly those who were watching the downing boy should feel ashamed of their selfishness and lack of a kind heart. They must also learn a lesson from the constable as his greatness can enlighten some of their cruel mindset.
