THE true spirit of the language movement using Bangla in every sphere of life is still elusive even after creating a sovereign nation-state 48 years ago which set up on the true spirit of language movement 1952. The successive governments have drastically failed to establish the primordial commitment rather Bangla has become marginalised against the vigorous spread of English medium and English version educational institutions and Hindi cultural aggression that seen in the wrong accentual presentation in radio and television channels. From high court to educational institutions- school, college and university level, a commercial venture to cultural events, communication and dialogue from high class to low-class society, we see Bangla is rapidly becoming marginalised.
Two directives of the Supreme Court issued in 2012 and 2014 asked to use of Bangla in all spheres of life and stopping distortions of the language. Many government and non-government offices still avoid the use of Bangla language ignoring the law and the SC directives. Not only at the individual level but also at the government level, disregard for the language has been blatant, belying the spirit of the historic Language Movement of 1952.
It is pathetic that students of many universities, medical colleges and engineering schools hesitate to learn Bangla as the institutions ignore Bangla in their syllabus. Our unrealistic passion for English is as the colonial legacy and lack of self-respect, though Japan, China, France, Germany, and many other countries run their curriculum in their own language. The court which issued directives to use Bangla in all spheres of life following Article 3 of the Constitution still writes verdict in English. The communication gap between the central and peripheral people is the undeniable fact of the gap.
Unless we learn how to respect to thyself and understand the value of our mother tongue and face-off the cloak of a foreign language, our dignity and pride would be a stampede and overall human development will remain unfulfilled.
