We must save ourselves from the cruelty of politics

An elderly mother in exchange for her life saved her son Alamgir, a supporter of a ruling party’s faction, in the city on Friday when she resisted the rival faction supporters’ attack. The attackers carrying sticks and sharp weapons swooped on Alamgir around 11:00 pm when he, along with his family members, was attending a neighbour’s marriage ceremony. In absence of real opposition political party’s activities, a factional clash within the ruling party spread out though very little appeared on the media.
The killing of the elderly woman before family members is a sheer example of the deteriorating law and order and the factional clashes inside the powerful ruling party. The government should uphold the ‘rules of law’ not ‘rule by law’ to contain such violence. As the government does not comply with the democratic values and spirit, the subsystem cannot comply with the values.
Even the perpetrators, allegedly loyal to local Ward Councillor Ayub Ansar in Badda area, did not allow the family members to go to hospitals for half an hour. After the attackers left the area, the family members rushed her to a local hospital, where doctors referred her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The victim succumbed to her injuries on the way to DMCH due to a poor state of emergency healthcare in the private medical facilities.
Surprisingly, Officer-in-Charge of Badda Police Station Parvez Islam said the elderly woman Rakiya fell sick while trying to save her son during the attack. He said that they did not see any injury marks on her body. Home Minister Asaduzzman Khan before the February 1 city polls confirmed the need for maintaining law and order.
It is difficult to be human and not shocked by such politics where criminals are protected by submissive police.
Nobody shall remain alive forever. There were brutal and powerful kings and queens who are no more. Show of power for using hateful crimes is always condemned by history. They made lives of others miserable only to end themselves dangerously.
The days of kings and queens as rulers are no more. Sensible people desire to see politics of good men and women to bring changes for social good and people’s glory. We have been anxious to see clean politics for peace and order. With violent and corrupt elements going about fearlessly, it is deceptive for the Home Minister to expect law and order.
We are living in cruel and inhuman conditions where security of life and decency of manners are flying away from politics.
