A news report published in this daily on Tuesday said police recovered the body of a female doctor from the third floor of her rented apartment in city’s Kalabagan area on Monday afternoon. The deceased, identified as Dr Sabira Rahman, 47, was working at the Radiology Department of the city’s Green Life Medical College Hospital. She divorced her husband a few days ago and was staying in the flat sharing with one Kaniz Subarna.
Police is suspecting that the doctor was murdered as her body bore injury marks of sharp weapons. On Monday morning a fire broke out in Dr Sabira’s flat. However, the fire was doused before the fire service personnel reached there. Dr Sabira’s body was found lying on the floor. Police suspect the killers created this fire incident as a diversion. Initially, police suspected that she had died because of the fire.
Following the incident, police detained three people — Kaniz Subarna, who shared the flat with Sabira, one of Subarna’s friends, and Ramzan, a security guard of the building — for questioning.
The incidents of rape, gang rape, killing of women and girls were more frequent in 2020 than in the years before, according to rights body Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) and Bangladesh Mohila Parishad. They also mentioned that incidents of murder after rape, sexual harassment and domestic violence have occurred too often. ASK said 907 women and girls were raped in nine months of the year while 200 were gang raped. On the other hand, the Mohila Parishad claimed 1,093 children and women were raped from January to October the same year, while 205 were gang raped. However, both the rights bodies said the actual number of rape victims would be much higher as many women do not report abuse.
We said it many times that we have created such a Bangladesh where criminals have no fear in committing crimes only the victims have no protection of police in preventing crimes. We seem to be collectively irresponsible for the good of the people. The criminals must know we have powerful and efficient police not to get away with crimes. The problem is, there is so much corruption in the police and lower judiciary that crimes are good business.
