Sylhet Correspondent :
Water Development Board (WDB) has not yet reconstructed and repaired the protection embankments of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.
The reconstruction was scheduled to be started on December 31 last but show formation of implementation committees is delaying the start date of the project, sources said.
Farmers are in fear of crop loss due to possible rains, floods or other calamities.
Superintending engineer of WDB, Sylhet region, Nurul Islam Sarker said, Tk 117.2 million has been sanctioned for the work on embankments for protecting 133,000 hectares of Boro croplands in Sunamganj and Tk 15 million in Sylhet to protect over 14000 hectares of land this year.
Last year, Tk 159 million was spent for embankment protection work, he added.
Admitting the delay the official said a total of 114 implementation committees have been formed till yesterday and the rest 147 will be formed soon after getting the names of the nominated members.
“We are trying our best to finish the job as soon as possible. Repair of 114 km protection embankments would be done”, he further said.
Banned guidebooks flood Sylhet markets
Sale of banned note and guide books is going unhindered at all book markets in Sylhet city for lax administrative controls.
Guardians of the primary and secondary level students alleged that school teachers encourage students to buy the illegal note and guide books.
On the other hand, book sellers said that they sell the substandard academic books because of their high demand in the market.
Nurul Islam, a guardian who bought a guidebook for class VIII at Tk 700 from Zindabazar, told that he had to buy the book at repeated request by his brother Bodrul.
Shorif Ahmed, owner of a bookstall in the city’s Surma Market, said some unscrupulous Dhaka-based publishers supply the banned note and guide books to the local booksellers for making a brisk business.
