A substantial amount of irregularities, lack of good governance have been found in the climate related projects implemented by Bangladesh Water Development Board (WDB), says Transparency International Bangladesh.
TIB, a civil society organization dedicated to fighting against corruption, made the disclosure in a research article presented by its program manager Golam Mahiuddin in its Dhanmondi office on Wednesday morning (Aug 23).
In the article it is said that WDB is influenced by powerful people while implementing the climate projects starting from ruling party’s MPs, secretaries or even UP chairmen. Corruption and irregularities have been found in dam construction projects.
TIB executive director at the time Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, adviser Dr. Sumaiya Khair and program manager Raju Ahmed Masum were present at the press conference.
TIB also said WDB is working on six climate projects without disclosing it to common people. They are implementing the projects in covert and favored many influential people’s recommendations in four projects. Moreover, local MPs, secretaries and
UP chairmen influenced the projects’ work.
The research article mentioned that WDB is puzzled with ambiguity and irregularities on the construction and maintenance to dam. Similar evidence was found after inspecting the dam construction work in haor areas involving corruption between WDB employees and contractors.
It is also noted in the article that with the funding of Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund (BCCTF), WDB has implemented a total of 141 projects worth Tk 1,131 crore starting from the fiscal year 2009-2011 till July this year.
