WB promises $80m for slum dweller’s housing

The World Bank has promised to provide US dollar 80 million to construct 1,500 flats for the slum dwellers at five elected A-category Municipalities (Pourasava).
Prime Minister Sheikh disclosed this in parliament, while replying to a tabled question from opposition bench member Fakhrul Imam Wednesday.
She said the government has undertaken a pilot project aimed at completing the construction of flats for the slum dwellers in a five-year duration, adding, “The designing and feasibility study of the project is underway.”
“The National Housing Authority has undertaken an initiative involving Taka 366.34 crore to construct 5,472 flats for the low income groups and slum dwellers,” the Prime Minister said.
She informed the House that the low income groups and slum dwellers would be able to buy those flats on easy installment in a 20-year duration.
Besides, the Awami League government through the National Housing Authority has undertaken 47 housing projects to construct 6,145 flats and developing 6,246 plots for low income groups in six divisional cities, 21 districts and 10 upazilas across the country, Sheikh Hasina said.
She said that construction work of 6-story 32 buildings having 1,536 flats of Boira Housing Estate in Khulna is under process. Khulna Development Authority has initiated to arrange housing facility for 14,000 families.
Besides, the government under Ashrayan Project has rehabilitated 1.32 lakh families across the country, the Prime Minister informed the parliament.
