Incessant rains accompanied with high tidal surge and hilly flown flash flood for the last nine days paralyses the civic life of the port city for the last few days .
Low lying areas and most of the city areas submerged with knee deep to waist deep water. Mentionable that most of the mosques in the low lying areas in city hampers conducting Juma prayer and most of the devotees could not perform juma prayer due to submerge of ground floor yesterday.
Metrological office sources said 100 mm rainfall recorded during the last 24 hours upto 6 am on Friday and and total rainfall for last 8 days recorded 1064 mm.
The suffereings of the low lying areas enhanced following the high tide in the sea as the tide water enters in the city through different passages. The rain affected areas are Oxygen, Hamzarbagh, Muradpur, Aturardepot, Bahaddarhat, sulakbahar, Katalgong, Nasirabad, Baizid, solssahar, chowkbazar, Panchanalish, DC road, Khaja Road, Chandgaon, Mohra, Bakalia , Chaktai, Korbanigonj, Masterpool, boubazar, Miakhan Nagar, Rajakhali, Dwan Bazar, Agrabad, Chotapol, Barapol, CDA, Halishhar, Pahartali, Sagarika, Patenga slum side.
Most of these areas gone under water and the household utensils flown away with ebb tide and flash flood, different local sources said. Ground floors of the most buildings in these area went under knee deep to waist deep water and the height of water increases following the entering of tidal water from sea accompanied flash water.
Kitchen markets of Chowdkbazar, Bahaddarhat, Reazuddin Bazaar, Bibirhat, Boxirhat, Bangle Bazaar, are the worst sufferers as their merchandise flown away with ebb tide.
On the other hand, the whole sale markets of Chaktai and Khatungonj experienced heavy damage of essential commodities as their commodity godowns submerged suddently in the night on Thursday .
Meanwhile the prices of the fresh vegetables, fishes and meat go up beyond buying capacity as scarcity of these items prevailing in the market as the vegetable venders did not turn up in city markets.
A dweller of Chokbazar told this reporter that there are acute shortage of fresh vegetable in Chokbazar.
He said every types of vegetables like Karala, patal, bean, long bean, bangles , derash, are being sold ranging from Tk.50 to Tk.80 per kg depend on varieties of vegetables.
Fish prices gone beyond buying capacity as the sea fishes not turned in the market due to stoppage of fishing in the bay for the last one week due to rough sea.
Port sources said cargo handling in the Chittagong Port and outer berth remain suspended from Thursday morning.
Airport sources said foreign airlines operated their flights as usually with delay but the domestic flights remained suspended from Thursday.
Meanwhile district control room sources said low lying areas of 13 upazilas of Chittaging are in under water and lakhs of people marooned with flash flood and tidal surges in the south Chittagong. People of the coastal upazilas are starving, different sources said.
Communications within the upazila areas remain suspended as the inner roads inundated with waist deep water. Costal upazilas are the worst sufferers than the plain upazilas of north Chittaging.
Crops land in these upazilas washed away and hence crisis of vegetables are prevailing in the markets. Fish hatcheries and shrimp cultivation damaged to the maximum extents in Banskali, Chokoria and Pekua upazilas of Cox’sBazar, a sources said.
