Waterlogged city dwellers worst sufferers

Incessant heavy downpour for the last 24 hours has paralysed the civic life of the port city yesterday .
Low-lying areas of the city inundated with rain water accompanied by tidal surge and flash flood. Holiday makers are the worst sufferers on Thursday and Friday as they failed to turn up their city destinations from village homes after enjoying Eid festival.
Metrological office sources said 114 mm rainfall recorded during the last 24 hours upto 9 am on Friday and 38 mm rainfall recorded upto noon yesterday.
The sufferings of the low- lying areas enhanced following the high tide in the sea as the tide water enters in the city through different passages.
The rain affected areas are Oxygen, Hamzarbagh, Muradpur, Aturardepot, Bahaddarhat, sulakbahar, Katalgong, Nasirabad, Baizid, Solssahar, Chowkbazar, Panchanalish, DC road, Khaja road, chandgaon, Mohra, Bakalia , chaktai, Korbanigonj, Masterpool, Boubazar, Miakhan Nagar, Rajakhali, Dwan Bazar, Agrabad, Chotapol, Barapol, CDA, Halishhar, Pahartali, Sagarika, Patenga slum side.
 Most of these areas gone under water and the household utensils flown away with ebb tide, different local sources said. Ground floors of the most buildings in these area went under knee deep to waist deep water and the height of water increases following the entering of tidal water from sea accompanied flash water. Kitchen markets of Chowdkbazar, Bahaddarhat, Reazuddin Bazaar, Bibirhat, Boxirhat, Bangle Bazaar, are the worst sufferers as their merchandise flown away with ebb tide.
 On the other hand, the whole sale markets of Chaktai and Khatungonj experienced heavy damage of essential commodities as their commodity godowns submerged suddenly in the night on Thursday .
Meanwhilethe prices of the fresh vegetables, fishes and meat go up beyond buying capacity as scarcity of these items prevailing in the market as the vegetable venders did not turn up in city after weeklong Eid holiday.
 The normal functioning of the trading is expectedto begin from today after weeklong eid holidays, traders sources said.
