Water transport workers have announced a sit-in programme in front of the BIWTA office from Sunday (May 23) morning if launch services on all routes do not resume by then.
In a press release, the Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation (Bangladesh Water Transport Workers’ Federation) said the workers were hugely affected by the lockdown since the government did not take any alternative measures for their livelihoods. People are spending two to three times more on travelling back to their workplaces after Eid holidays, ignoring health rules during the coronavirus pandemic.
The organisation has demanded immediate resumption of launch services in compliance with health guidelines and payment of all arrears by May 22.
Launch services have remained suspended from April 5 when the government enforced a nationwide lockdown to curb the transmission of coronavirus.
