The Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) had spent Tk 2.67 billion in three projects for reconstruction and construction of its drains and canals during the last 10 years but, the water stagnation problem is yet to be resolved mainly due to irregularities, lack of coordination between concerned agencies and lack of proper monitoring, a number city dwellers alleged.
On the other hand, the ECNEC approved another Tk 2.36 billion months ago for a new project in this regard.
The prime target of the said projects was to mitigating sufferings of the city dwellers due to stagnation of water after a moderate rainfall on the different areas. Even after an hour long rainfall, many areas go inundated. The excessive rains on Tuesday and Wednesday also caused much for the city dwellers as a good number dwelling houses and shops on the prime commercial areas and on different markets were inundated for hours.
The situation may turn more serious with the onslaught of monsoon within days, many people apprehended.
Anwarul Haque, an inhabitant of the city’s Subidbazar area said, “The SCC should ensure proper monitoring and quality works alongside recovery of the grabbed portion of different streams and canals from the influential people, which is very tough”,
However, the SCC authority claimed the situation had improved much and the long time water stagnation had reduced. They admitted water stagnation after heavy rainfall, especially on the low-lying areas is common due to poor drainage system. Mainly it was due to the drains being blocked with wastages, for which rain water cannot pass easily.
They further said the rainwater that remains in the low-lying areas recede within hours after the rain stops.
Chief Engineer of SCC Nur Azizur Rahman said, The SCC however would soon do some more work to resolve the problem in some areas.
