Water stagnancy is one of the major problems of Sylhet city for extreme sufferings for the dwellers. They suffer much this time as the north eastern divisional city was badly hit due to the early rains along with storms during the last two weeks, although the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has spent over Tk 300 million in a number of projects to recovering the illegally grabbed canals over the years. Power supply to almost all the areas were also snapped for long hours due to frequent storms and thunderstorms.
A number of city dwellers like Ataur Rahman, a trader of the city’s Mohajanpatti said the costly projects during the last 3 years failed to resolve the water stagnancy on most of the areas. Even on moderate showers for an hour, these areas go inundated, causing much for the city dwellers, said Mokarram Hossain of the Shibganj bazar.
These include, Hawapara, Jollarpar, Chhararpar, Dargah road, uposhahar, Ambarkhana Manipuripara, Shibganj, Sonarpara, Kolapara, Kanishail, Akhalia, Kajalsha, Nobab Road, Sheikhghat, Jalalabad, Housing estate, etc. Chief Executive Officer of the SCC Enamul Habib denied the allegations of irregularities in implementing the projects and said the SCC had successfully done much works and these would help resolving the water stagnancy. The official said early rains this year had caused the trouble but we have continued our efforts for resolving the water stagnancy. The city dwellers’ sufferings was lesser this year compared to the previous years, he said and added the situation would improve soon.
The SCC would also continue drive for digging and reclamation of the grabbed canals in all the areas, he said, things would improve greatly before the monsoon starts. Out of the 568 km long drains in the city areas, 475 km are pucca. The SCC is working on completing the rest drains into concrete ones, which would help more. Sylhet experienced 852 mm rains from 1 to 22 April while the highest rainfall 165 mm was recorded on 5 April. This is the record for April in recent years, Met officials said.
Youth commits suicide : A young man allegedly committed suicide by taking poison at Sadipur village in Osmaninagar upazila on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Salik Ullah (40), son of Sajid Ullah, a resident of the village.
police said Salik, father of three children, took poison in his room at night.
Later, he was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Police sent the body to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Charge sheet of Habiganj murder case rejected: A Habiganj court yesterday rejected the charge sheet of four-child murder case due to absence of main documents.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Samsad Begum refused the charge sheet after a hearing. The court also fixed May 5 for the next hearing and asked investigation officer of the case Abdul Muktadir to submit the charge sheet with main documents.
On April 16, nine were indicted in connection with the killing case.
Abdul Muktadir, officer-in-charge of detective branch of police, submitted the charge sheet before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Kausar Alam. On February 17, police recovered the bodies of four schoolboys from a ditch at Shundratiki village under Bahubal upazila. Four Of the accused have already given confessional statements before the court under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
