DU Correspondent :
Speakers said at a discussion on Tuesday on the Dhaka University (DU) campus, there are many loopholes in the planning of WASA to supply filtering water in Dhaka City. As a result, the people cannot get purified water. So, day by day water based problems are increasing.
Soil, Water and Environment (SWE) Department of DU organized the function marking the `World Water Day-2016′. Professor Sirajul Haque, Chairman of SWE Department, chaired the function, while BUET Water Resources and Management Department Professor Tanvir Ahmed, DU SWE Department Professors Md. Didar-ul-Alam and Md. Akter Husain Khan participated at the discussion, among others.
Professor Tanvir Ahmed said every day we provide water for the residents of Dhaka City, but we cannot give them purified water always. So, we have to ensure them purified water. For this, firstly we have to save the rivers around Dhaka City. The time to protect Buriganga has been over already. As such we have to protect the lake of Hatirjheel on priority basis.
Water management is very difficult job. Our water supply management should be more active and skillful, said Professor Sirajul Haque. `Once I went to Saydabad for researching on water, then I saw there, that water level was very down. That is very concerning issue for us. So, we should take a better plan for Dhaka City’, he said.
Professor Didar-ul-Alam said, if we want to solve the water problem in Dhaka City, firstly we have to stop dumping of industrial waste in the rivers around the City.
We should think right now about the future, as water crisis is globally said Professor Md. Akter Husain Khan.
