Our Crosspondont :
The water of Teesta River is increasing in Lalmonirhat due to the steep slope coming down from the upper reaches and heavy rains. As a result, the residents of the char areas of the district are getting panicked.
On Sunday (June 4) morning, the water of the Teesta River was flowing at Dalia-Dowani Point at a depth of 08 cm below the danger level. Chars and riverine lowlands have already been flooded. The Water Development Board (Paubo) estimates that the water level will exceed the danger level in the next few hours if the water level continues to rise.
It can be seen on the ground that due to the rising water of the river Teesta, even though the water has not risen in the houses yet, the low roads and ghats are sinking. Severe river erosion has occurred due to increase in water speed. The boatmen have started repairing and maintaining the boat.
Seedbeds and various crop fields in the coastal areas of Teesta and Dharla are being submerged in water. Waterlogging has occurred in the lowlands. Most of the gates of the Teesta Barrage, the largest irrigation project in the country, have been opened to control the flow of water.
Elias Ali, deputy assistant engineer in the water science branch of the Dalia Water Development Board (Paubo), said the Teesta water level was rising due to heavy rains and rising water from upstream.
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Abu Zafar said preparations were being made to deal with the flood situation. Dry food has been stored to help the waterlogged families.
