Seventy five percent of water crisis in Chittagong city is expected to be mitigated after completion of the physical construction works of the Karnaphuli Water Supply Project by January 2015 next.
The Chittagong Water and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) sources said the 62 percent of the physical construction works of the Karnaphuli Water Supply Project (KWSP) has already been completed and the rest would be completed by January 2015.
CWASA has embarked upon the mega project KWSP at a cost of Tk 1510 crore to mitigate water crises for next 20 years which remained shelved for last ten years.
A total of 13.6 crore litres water will be supplied in port city per day from KWSP from March 2015 next, CWASA sources said.
CWASA is formally going to implement its another three mega-schemes by June 2018 targeting to meet the demand of water consumption for next five decades in view of rapid urbanization and industrialization.
Currently CWASA produces 220 million litres (ML) of water per day against the daily demand of 550 MLs which is too inadequate to meet the growing demands of nearly 55 lakh city dwellers for domestic, commercial and industrial purposes, a top official of CWASA told BSS.
Talking to BSS, CWASA Managing Director (MD) Engineer A K M Fazlullah said per day water production capacity of CWASA would go up to 36.5 MLs which will be two times higher than the existing production capacity after successful completion of the giant project within next one year.
“At least 62 percent construction works of KWSP including integrated structure, water treatment plant, construction of pipe line, water preserver at city’s Lalkhanbazar and Baizid Bostami areas have already been completed and we expect to complete KWSP within December 2014,” CWASA MD added.
Engineer Fazlullah also said overall capacity and productivity of CWASA would definitely increase considerably within one year after completion of the project.
CWASA covers only 160 square kilometres of the city with water supply to the inhabitants by rotation leaving nearly two-thirds of the entire city out of supply.
The CWASA authority also expects to produce 136 million litre water per day from the KWSP being constructed on 31.5 acres of lands at Pomra village, adjacent to the river Karnaphuli under Rangunia upazila of the district.
