UNB, Dhaka :
Rational management of water bodies, infrastructure development and good practices in fish farming can ensure sustainable growth of the country’s aquaculture sector, says a new study.
The study pointed out that sustained growth in the sector will significantly contribute to the country’s overall economic development, employment generation, poverty alleviation, and inclusive social and environmental growth.
The preliminary findings of the study ‘Supports received by the Aquaculture Sector in Bangladesh: Existing Reality and Scope for Improvements’
was disclosed at a workshop held at PKSF auditorium in the capital on Wednesday. Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BAFF) jointly organised the workshop titled, ‘Existing Reality and Scope for Improvements of Aquaculture Sector in Bangladesh’ to discuss the prospects of enhancing the contributions of shrimp sector to the economic growth and development of Bangladesh, and the challenges the grassroots shrimp producers face.
Highlighting the potential of aquaculture sector in Bangladesh, the study says better investment in infrastructure, extension of credit and making available good seed and feed can also contribute towards increasing fish production in the country. Making his power-point presentation, economics professor of Dhaka University Dr Bazlul Haque Khandker said annual fish production increased to 3.55 million metric tonnes in 2013-14 from 2.56 million metric tones in 2007-08.
More than 10 percent of the country’s population depends directly or indirectly on fisheries for their livelihood, while 60 percent of the national animal protein consumption is met by fish, he said. The economist observed that the timely use of good quality feed is an important pre-requisite to boosting aquaculture production in Bangladesh.
Chaired by PKSF managing director Abdul Karim, the workshop was addressed, among others, by Adviser to the former Caretaker Government Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman, Senior Secretary of Finance Ministry Mahbub Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Commerce Ministry Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Maksudul Hasan Khan, former Senior Secretary of the Agriculture Ministry CQK Mustaq Ahmed, former Member of Planning Commission and former Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University Prof Dr Abdus Sattar Mandal, FAO Deputy Representative to Bangladesh David Doolan and Prof Dr Mohammad Ali Taslim of Dhaka University.
