Wastewater Treatment Laboratory at JU

A Wastewater Treatment Laboratory to implement the indigenous techniques to treat industrial wastewater inaugurated on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus yesterday.
Department of Environmental Sciences of JU installed the laboratory under Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP).
The department has also invented several indigenous techniques to treat industrial wastewater over the last 13 years.
Member of the Public Service Commission Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir, also former vice chancellor of JU, inaugurated the laboratory as chief guest.
A workshop on wastewater treatment plant was held at Zahir Raihan auditorium while JU VC Prof Farzana Islam, pro-VC Prof Abul Hossain addressed the event as the special guest. Dr Khabir Uddin, manager of the project, chaired the event.
Among others, ANM Fakhruddin, chairman of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Raisul Alam Mondal, director general of Department of Environment, and Md Abdul Matin, director general of Rural Development Academy, Bogra, were present.
The speakers said that the water is being polluted day by day in developing countries like Bangladesh. The lab will provide a proper guideline to the industrialists to operate their treatment plant in a sustainable way, they said.
Prof Khabir Uddin said, “We will collect the samples of industrial wastewater and will fix the methods of purifying them using the indigenous techniques. It will be more cost-effective than the foreign techniques.”
The project has been running as a sub-project of HEQEP.
Mentionable, the post graduate students will get enhanced research facilities here from now. Besides, it will be a proper place to conduct Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) related training with necessary field demonstrations.
JU to attend National Anthem Singing Program
A group of five thousand members from Jahangirnagar University (JU) will participate in the simultaneously singing program of “Amar Sonar Bangla Ami Tomay Bhalobashi” the National Anthem of Bangladesh on the victory day, 26th March 2014.
The program will be held at the National Parade Ground, Old Airport, Tezgaon to make a new world record by personal initiative and special direction of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The preparation meeting was held on March 12, 2014 at JU about joining the programme. JU Pro-VC Prof Dr Abul Hossain presided over the meeting.
JU Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique; Director of Student Welfare and Counseling Center, Prof Dr AKM Shahnawaz; Proctor, Dr Tapan Kumar Saha; Director of PR, Mir Qasem and others attended the meeting.
