Sedition case: Warrant against Tarique, 2 others

The Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday issued arrest warrants for BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman and two journalists of Ekushey Television in a sedition case filed against them.
Judge Mohammad Kamrul Hossain Mollah of the court passed the order taking into cognizance the chargesheet submitted against Tarique Rahman,
Ekushey TV Chief Reporter Mahathir Faruqui Khan and the TV Channel’s Special Correspondent Kanak Sarwar.
The court also directed the Officer-in-Charge of Tejgaon Police Station to submit a report on the execution of the arrest order by November 20. Meanwhile, the court granted bail to ETV Chairman Abdus Salam in the case. Besides, the court rejected petition of Kanak that sought time.
On September 6, Detective Branch Inspector Emdadul Haque, who is also Investigation Officer of the sedition case, submitted the chargesheet of the case against four persons, including Tarique Rahman.
On January 8, 2015, Sub-Inspector Borhanuddin filed the sedition case with Tejgaon Model Police Station in connection with a live telecast of an alleged provocative speech that was made by Tarique Rahman at a programme in London on January 5.
According to the case statement, Tarique Rahman provoked his party men delivering the ‘provocative’ speech against law enforcers which led the country to anarchic situation that time.
Salam reportedly committed the same offence broadcasting Tarique Rahman’s ‘provocative’ speech his television channel. The case statement added that telecasting Tarique’s speech posed a threat to the sovereignty of the country.
