A court of Dhaka on Tuesday issued warrants for the arrest of the complainant and the victim of a case filed against cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife Nitya on the charge of torturing their domestic help.
Judge Tanzina Islam of Dhaka’s Women and
Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 issued the warrants for the arrest of complainant Khandaker Mozammel Haque and victim Mahfuza Akhter Happy, as both of them did not appear in the court on five occasions. Public Prosecutor of the Tribunal Ali Asgar Shwapan said that the court could not record their depositions on those days for their absence. Accused Shahadat and his wife Nitya were, however, present in the courtroom.
On September 6, 2014, injured Mahfuza Akhter Happy, 11, the domestic help of Shahadat’s family, was found lying on a road within the Sangbadik Colony area of Pallabi in the city. Happy, then, claimed that Shahadat and his wife tortured her and the couple went into hiding.
The following day, journalist, Khandakar Mozammel Haque, filed the case against Shahadat and his wife Nitya with Mirpur Model Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000.
Later, on December 29, last year, Mirpur Model Police Station Inspector M Shafiqur Rahman and also the Investigation Officer of the case submitted the chargesheet of the case in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka against the two accused.
On January 12, this year, the case was transferred to Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 from the CMM court. Later, the Tribunal framed charges against Shahadat and Nitya on February 22.
