Warrant against 16 BNP leaders for bus torching

A Dhaka court yesterday (Monday) issued arrest warrants against BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah and 15 others in a case filed for torching and vandalising a bus in the capital’s Mirpur area during a strike sponsored by BNP on January 26 this year.
Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah of Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka issued the warrants on Monday after taking the charge-sheet, into
cognizance that showed the accused as fugitives. Former BNP MP Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s Special Assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Khaleda Zia’s Press Secretary Maruf Kamal, Swechchhasebak Dal President Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and former President of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Azizul Bari Helal, among others, face warrants.
Zakir Hossain, driver of a bus of Shikhar Paribahan, filed the case with Pallabi Police Station after his vehicle was vandalised and set on fire during the shutdown.
On April 30, Assistant Sub-Inspector Abu Sayeed of the police station submitted the charge-sheet against 21 people, including BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, under the Special Powers Act.
