Vulnerable buildings pose risk in Sylhet city

Confusion has created between Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) over removal of risky and vulnerable buildings including residential and business centres of the divisional city. Due to the confusion, none of them is taking steps to remove the risky and vulnerable installations from the city corporation area.
 As a result, earth quake or any other disaster risks are increasing day by day here. People in the city feel insecurity as many oldest and vulnerable buildings are yet to remove by the authorities concerned despite the risk.
Due to their pushing and pulling over the responsibility, innocent citizen in the city are now facing immense suffering over the issue. They are passing their days and nights amid extreme panic of breaches the risky and vulnerable buildings by disasters like earthquake, they said.
The Executive Engineer of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Md. Nur Azijur Rahman after a spot visit detected 45 oldest, risky and vulnerable buildings in the city. Of them, 55 buildings were totally unfit for living.
Dr. Johir Bin Alam, Professor of SUST said that, Bangladesh is now in heavy risk of earthquake centering the geographical reason. According to the prediction , the earthquake may attack anytime what will pose serious risk in the Sylhet city as most of the buildings have constructed without following any building codes. For this reason, the authorities concerned should take necessary steps immediately to remove these. Otherwise, they will face extreme consequences as soon as early. It is mentioned that, over 100 risky and vulnerable buildings in the city corporation area have been using as residence and trade centre for long under the nose of concerned authorities of SCC. But none of them are taking necessary initiative to remove those. SCC officials say that, SCC is containing the responsibility to remove the risky and vulnerable buildings and look after the city and take steps for removal the oldest and vulnerable buildings.
Govt supplies 13,700 tonnes of Boro seeds
The government has supplied around 13,703 tonnes of Boro paddy seeds of high yielding varieties (HYV) in Sylhet division during the current dry season,
Official sources said. Of the total, highest 6477 tonnes were supplied in Sunamganj district, having the highet Boro lands, 2304 tonnes in Sylhet district, 3408 tonnes in Habiganj district and 1514 tonnes in Moulvibazar district seed depots, informed Deputy Director (Headquarter) of DAE, Sylhet Divisional Office Dr Mamun Ur Rashid.
The official said the programme is implemented by the BADC. Already 60 per cent of Boro croplands have been transplanted, the official said and added, the farmers in haor region, however, have transplanted about 80 per cent of lands.
This year about 456,835 hectares of land in the division will be used for cultivating the crop with a target to produce 17,82,000 tonnes of rice, Dr Rashid informed.
Of the total, 76,830 hectares would be in Sylhet district to produce 280 000 tonnes of rice, 50,485 hectares in Moulvibazar for producing targeted 193,600 tonnes of rice, 113,600 hectares in the district of Habiganj to produce 471,000 tonnes of rice and 215,900 hectares in Sunamganj district with a target to produce 838,000 tonnes of rice.
