Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President Nurul Haque Nur and at least 24 others were injured in two attacks allegedly carried out by activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Muktijuddha Mancha in DUCSU office on Sunday noon.
VP Nur and others injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for treatment around 2:00pm, reports our Dhaka University (DU) correspondent.
Besides, VP Nur, Rukmia Hossain Raz, Golam Kibria and Zahidul Islam of Kabi Nazrul College, Ariful Islam of Jahangirnagar University, Moshiur Rahman of Dhaka University and Aminur who claimed himself Nurul’s younger brother were injured, among others, in the attack.
Among them, four were injured critically and kept at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
They are VP Nur and his younger brother Aminur, APM Sohel, a student of Jagannath University, and Tuhin Farabi, another university student.
Md Alauddin, a Resident Surgeon of DMCH, told The New Nation that the condition of Farabi is critical and he was on life support.
Three other critically injured were kept in the emergency department’s ICU. The remaining 20 were kept under surveillance in the emergency department. There are signs of injury in various parts of their bodies, he added.
Witnesses said the first attack was carried out on VP Nur and some activists of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC) when he was holding a meeting at his DUCSU office at around 12:30pm.
The activists of BCL and a faction of Muktijuddha Mancha allegedly hurled brick chips at Nur’s DUCSU office room when he was holding the meeting.
At one stage, BCL DU unit president Sanjit Chandra Das and general secretary Saddam Hossain, also assistant general secretary of DUCSU, along with their followers reached in front of the DUCSU office and asked them to come out but Nurul denied, leading to an altercation.
When the two BCL leaders left the scene, other BCL men equipped with wooden sticks attacked Nur and his fellows. The activists of Muktijuddha Mancha faction later joined with the BCL men, leaving 24, including Nur, injured.
DU’s proctor AKM Golam Rabbani rescued Nur and others injured and sent them to DMCH around 45 minutes after the attack, said the witnesses.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital director AKM Nasir Uddin said that around 15 to 20 injured had been admitted at the DMCH.
They were being given treatment with highest priority, he added.
Injured Hasan Al Mamun, convenor of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC), said: “I was first attacked by the activists of Muktijuddho Mancha near Madhur canteen.”
The attack by Muktijuddho Mancha members was led by their Dhaka University (DU) chapter President Aminul Islam Bulbul and General Secretary Al Mamun, he alleged.
BGSRPC Joint Convener Rashed Khan said: “The second attack was carried out by the Muktijuddho Mancha, as well as the members of BCL DU unit.”
Rashed added: “They carried out the attack in the presence of DU Chhatra League President Sonjit Chandra Das and General Secretary Saddam Hussain.”
DU Chhatra League General Secretary Saddam Hussain said: “This is their internal conflict [between quota reform protesters and Muktijuddho Mancha activists]. I would request both parties to resolve the issue between them and not create unrest inside the campus.”
He urged DU authorities to take action against those involved in vandalizing the DUCSU building.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC) called protest programme at all the educational institutions across the country for today (Monday), condemning the attack.
