Voting in SCBA polls begins today

The voting in two-day polls to elect the office bearers for 2021-2022 session of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) will start today (Wednesday) at 10.00 am.
It will begin at 10.00 am and will continue till 5.00 pm with one hour recess in the middle on election days.
A total of 51 candidates are taking part in the election for 14 posts, election sub-committee sources said.
The polls held each year to elect 14 office bearers, of which seven are office-bearer posts and seven are executive members.
A total of 7722 lawyers will exercise their voting right in this election. A seven-member election sub-committee has been
formed headed by advocate AY Mashiuzzaman, former Secretary of the SCBA, to conduct the election.
Main contest will take place between two panels— pro-BNP ‘Blue Panel’ and pro-Awami League ‘White Panel’.
Advocate Fazlur Rahman and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal are contesting for the posts of President and General Secretary respectively from pro-BNP ‘Blue Panel’.
From this panel, Advocate Zainul Abedin Tuhin and Advocate Md Jalal Uddin are candidates for the two posts of Vice-President, Advocate Abdullah Al Mahbub for the post of Treasurer, Advocate Mahmud Hasan and Advocate Rashida Alim Oeeshi are candidates for the two posts of Assistant Secretary.
Advocate Monzurul Alam Sujan, Advocate Shafiqul Islam, Advocate Golam Akter Zakir, Advocate Parvin Kowser Munni, Advocate Redwan Ahmed Ranjib, Advocate Niaz Muhammad Mahbub and Advocate Ifthekar Uddin Mahmud are candidates for the seven posts of Executive Member from this panel.
Meanwhile, Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru and Advocate Abdul Alim Miah are vying for the posts of President and General Secretary from pro-Awami League ‘White Panel’.
Advocate Muhammad Shafique Ullah and Advocate Md Ali Azam will contest in the two posts of Vice-President, Advocate Iqbal Karim in the post of Treasurer, Advocate Safayet Sultana Rumi and Advocate ABM Noor A Alam will contest in the two posts of Assistant Secretary from the panel.
Advocate Mintu Kumar Mondal, Advocate Muntasir Uddin Ahmed, Advocate Md Sanwar Hossain, Advocate ABM Shibly Sadekeen, Advocate Serajul Haque, Advocate Mohi Uddin Ahmed and Advocate Mahfuzur Rahman Roman will contest in the seven posts of Executive Member from this panel.
Meanwhile, a fraction of pro-BNP lawyers declared a separate full panel in the election. Advocate ABM Waliur Rahman Khan and Advocate Mirza Al Mahmud are contesting for the posts of President and General Secretary respectively from the panel.
Leftist lawyers have announced their candidacies for 8 posts from a panel known as the ‘Red Panel’. Advocate KM Zabir and Advocate Md Gias Uddin Chowdhury are contesting for the posts of President and General Secretary respectively from the panel.
Apart from this Advocate Md Eunus Ali Akond declared his candidature for the President post.
Ruling Awami League backed ‘White panel’ secured 6 posts out of 14 included the posts of the President in the Supreme Court Bar Association election last year. Pro-BNP lawyers secured the rest of the 8 posts, including the Secretary.
