Voting in the two-day polls to elect office bearers for 2020-2021 session of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) started on Wednesday.
A total of 3,031 votes were cast on the first day yesterday, said Advocate Sharif U Ahmed, a member of the election sub-committee.
Vote casting began at 10.00am and continued till 5.00pm with one-hour recess in the middle of the election.
“A total of 31 candidates are taking part in the election against 14 posts,” Supreme Court Bar Superintendant Nimesh Chandra Das told
reporters. A total of 7,781 voters will exercise their franchise in the two-day polls.
The polls held each year to elect 14 office bearers. Of them, seven are office-bearer posts and seven executive members.
Senior Advocate AF Hassan Ariff has been performing the duties as Chief Election Commissioner.
Main contest will take place between two panels — pro-BNP ‘Blue Panel’ and pro-Awami League ‘White Panel’.
Senior Advocate Zainul Abedin and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal are contesting for the posts of President and Secretary respectively from pro-BNP panel.
From this panel, Advocate Md Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan and Advocate Md Jalal Uddin are candidates for the two posts of Vice-President, Barrister Ragib Rouf Chowdhury for the post of Treasurer, Advocate Mahmud Hassan and Advocate Ayub Ali Ashrafi for the two posts of Assistant Secretary.
Advocate Amirul Islam Khokan, Barrister Mar-E-um Khandaker, Advocate Mohaddes-ul Islam Tutul, Advocate Md Shafiur Rahman, Advocate Mohammad Mohsin Kabir, Advocate Mohammad Sharif Uddin Ratan and Advocate Mohammad Iqbal Hossain are candidates for the seven posts of Executive Member from this panel.
Meanwhile, Advocate A M Amin Uddin and Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque are vying for the posts of President and Secretary from pro-Awami League “White Panel.”
Advocate Md Moniruzzaman and Advocate Shakila Rawshan are contesting in the two posts of Vice-President, Advocate Dr Enamul Haque in the post of Treasurer, Advocate Bakir Uddin Bhuiyan and Advocate Mohammad Imtiaz Farooq in the two posts of Assistant Secretary from this panel.
Advocate Md Humayun Kabir, Advocate Md Kamruzzaman, Advocate Md Safayet Hossain Sajib, Advocate Md Tarjel Hossain, Advocate Mintu Kumar Mondol, Advocate Mohammad Moshiur Rahman and Advocate Mohammad Jaglul Kabir are contesting in the seven posts of Executive Member from this panel.
Beyond the two main panels Advocate Eunus Ali Akond is contesting for the post of President, Advocate Farhad Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan for the post of Assistant Secretary and Advocate Tapon Kumar Das for the post of Executive Member.
Ruling Awami League backed ‘White Panel’ secured six posts out of 14, which included the posts of the President, one Vice President, one Assistant Secretary and three Executive Members in the Supreme Court Bar Association election last year. On the other hand, the BNP backed ‘Blue Panel’ secured 8 posts, including the posts of the Secretary, one Vice President, Treasurer, one Assistant Secretary and four Executive Members.
