Deaths linked to the coronavirus have jumped past 7,000 in Bangladesh to reach 7,020 after it claimed the lives of 34 more Covid-19 patients over the previous 24 hours till Saturday.
Of the new deceased, 23 are men and 11 are women. Among the total dead, 5,362 or 76.38 percent are men while 1,6458 or 23.62 percent are women.
Besides, 1,329 fresh infections from the virus, officially known as Sars-CoV-2 responsible for Covid-19, were registered during the period, bringing the total caseload in the country to 489,178.
Currently, there are 64,655 active cases in the country.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) disclosed the information through a press release in the afternoon.
As per the press release, 3,185 people recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours to take the total recoveries in the country to 417,503.
The recovery rate from the coronavirus improved further reaching 85.35 percent.
Besides, the positivity rate — an indicator of the prevalence of the disease — was recorded at 10.52 percent in the last hours while the overall positivity rate is 16.54 percent.
Bangladesh has one of the lowest case fatality rates or CFR, which measures deaths among Covid-19 patients, at 1.44 percent.
During the period, 12,630 samples were tested in 140 labs across the country. With this, a total of 2,956,882 samples have so far been tested in the country.
On Friday, the country registered 19 deaths and 1,884 infections from coronavirus after testing 16,323 samples with a positivity rate of 11.54 percent.
Meanwhile, The global death toll from coronavirus has surged past 16 lakh to reach 1,601,168 after 12,731 more virus-related deaths were registered over the last 24 hours till 10am on Saturday.
Besides, the world saw record 717,024 cases during the period pushing the infections to 71,437,330 globally, according to data collated by tracking website Worldometer.
Of the currently infected 20,198,937 patients, 20,092,342 are in mild condition while 106,595 are in serious or critical condition.
So far, 49,637,225 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries.
The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 16,295,458 and 302,750 respectively while India has 2nd highest cases of 9,827,026 and third highest fatalities of 142,662 and Brazil has 2nd highest deaths of 180,453 and third highest cases of 6,836,313.
