Virtual courts grant bail to 1821 persons on third day

A total of 1,821 people accused in criminal cases secured bail on Thursday from virtual courts across the country, including Dhaka, on the third day of virtual hearings.
The courts granted them bail after holding hearings on the petitions through video conference, said a press release sent by Md Saifur Rahman, Special Officer of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court.
Earlier the online courts across the country granted
 bail to 144 people on Tuesday and 1013 people on Wednesday.
Saifur Rahman said that bail applications were filed through emails on Thursday in the district and sessions judges’ courts across the country and 1821 persons got bail. In total 2434 bail petitions were filed on May 14, he added.
Countrywide Online courts started proceedings on a limited scale on Monday, but the court started to grant bail on Tuesday.
The Chief Justice on Sunday for the first time in the country empowered the Appellate Division Chamber Judge and three High Court judges to hear the most urgent matters relating to writ petitions, bail appellations and civil and company cases through virtually during the long public holiday due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Similarly, the District and Metropolitan Sessions Judges, Special Judges, speedy trial tribunals and women and children repression prevention tribunals, juvenile courts, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrates and Chief Judicial Magistrates were empowered to hear only bail applications during the public holidays.
