Staff Reporter :The second-year Science group students of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College on Wednesday blocked the Baily Road, protesting the college decision of introducing day shift classes after the Eid. Protests erupted at noon after the college authorities informed them of the decision. The demonstrators started the blocking of the road in front of the college gate for three hours. About two hundred students took part in the protest with festoons written “You couldn’t protect Tonu inside the Cantonment, then how will you ensure our safety?”A scuffle between the protesters and on-duty policemen occurred as the police tried to remove the students from the street. The protesters also complained of harassment during their programme by on-duty policemen. Nasrin Nupur, a protester, told The New Nation that they were observing the programme calmly. But suddenly the police forced them to leave the street without telling anything. But the Assistant Commissioner of Ramna Zone Shibli Noman rejected the allegations. The demonstrators said that the students living in the far corners of the city won’t be able to reach home before nightfall. Day shift classes will start at 10am and end after 5pm. The decision is not wise at all from the security point of view. Not only that, timing will hamper their studies.A Viqarunnisa teacher, who wished to remain anonymous, said the decision to introduce day shift was taken last year, but the students who had enrolled themselves were not informed.
