A section of guardians, teachers (white panel) and representatives of civil society on Tuesday demanded justice for attacks on Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice-President (VP) Nurul Haque Nur and his 27 other followers at DUCSU Bhaban.
They also submitted a memorandum to the Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor seeking punishment for the alleged attackers (leaders and activists) of Muktijuddho Mancho and Bangladesh Chhatra League.
The memorandum was submitted to the DU VC Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman at the lounge of his office on the campus in the afternoon.
Writer Rakhal Raha, on behalf of the parents and civil
society members, read out the memorandum before the VC seeking his administrative measures to protect their children from campus violence and justice to DUCSU VP Nur and his 27 other followers, who were injured in an attack by the activists of Chhatra League and Muktijuddho Mancho on Sunday.
In the memorandum, the VC was alleged of supporting the attackers, as he and his administration did not put any heed to the volatile situation rather threatened the victims to expel from the university.
Referring to the attack on Nur, Raha said allegations of such type of incidents have been brought in the past but the university authorities did neither conduct any fair investigation nor ensure any justice.
Meanwhile, BNP backed Dhaka University (DU) teachers form a human chain in front of Aparajeyo Bangla sculpture on the DU premises in the afternoon.
They demanded punishment of the perpetrators whose attack left 28 injured including DUCSU VP Nur.
Speaking at the programme, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department Professor Laila Noor Islam said, “It is inconceivable that the Vice President of DUCSU was attacked. When someone attacks Dhaka University, it seems that the entire country has been attacked.”
She compared the incident to a terrorist attack and demanded immediate detention of all perpetrators and putting them on trial.
The injured were later taken to DMCH for treatment.
Of the injured, APM Suhel and Tuhin Farabi were allegedly thrown off the rooftop of the DUCSU building, said Hasan Al Mamun, Convener of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council.
Tuhin Farabi was kept at the intensive care unit of DMCH. However he was taken off life support on Monday as his condition improved, Resident Medical Officer Dr Md Alauddin of DMCH casualty block, said.
Besides, VP Nurul Haque Nur has sought to press charges against 37 people over the attack on him on Sunday.
The ruling party’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Dhaka University President Sanjit Chandra Das and General Secretary Saddam Hossain, who also serves as the DUCSU Assistant General Secretary, have been named in the plea.
DUCSU Social Service Secretary Akhter Hossain submitted the plea with the Shahbag Police Station on Tuesday.
Shahbag Police Station OC Abul Hasan said that the petitioner has been asked to make some changes.
“A separate case won’t be opened but the names will be added to the previous case,” he said.
According to Nur’s plea, around 12:00 noon on December 22, Muktijuddho Mancho leaders and activists suddenly attacked them within the DUCSU office.
Nur alleged that the activists led the second attack “with the intent of murdering” him and gravely injured him.
