UNB, Dhaka :
Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz on Tuesday said that the violence during the third phase of upazila elections, held on Saturday, was tolerable.
“Whatever incidents of violence came to our knowledge, we’ve taken actions against those accordingly. The violence led to suspension of voting in 26 polling stations. If we had prior information, we would have been able to tackle those,” he said.
The violence could not be resisted fully as the number of law enforcers was much less than that of miscreants,
he told reporters at his Election Commission Secretariat in the city.
“Even then the violence was at tolerable level. The incidents of killing took place in areas which were far away from polling stations. So, we couldn’t intervene in those,” the commissioner claimed.
Shah Nawaz said united efforts by all stakeholders are needed for making any election a fair.
Elections in 81 upazila parishads of the country’s 41 districts was held on Saturday in the third phase of the local body polls amid capture of polling stations, stuffing of fake votes and violence that killed at least two people.
