Bagerhat Correspondent :
About 25 thousand people including students of some 8 villages have been suffering a lot for more than one month due to the broken Laksmikhali Bridge over Laksmikhali River that separates Purbo Sayera village from Paschim Sayera village in Saitgumbaz Union Parishad under Sadar Upazila in Bagerhat district.
Villages are Purbo Sayera, Paschim Sayera, Chaksree, Duyela, , Gilatala, Alipur, Kashipur, Gobindapur etc. People of the villages are to cross the broken bridge every day risking their lives and very often accidents are taken places. As many as 5 educational institutions are situated in those villages. They are Sayera Govt. Primary School, Sayer-Madhudia Collegiate School, Dhopabari Govt. Primary School, Chaksree High School and Al-Madina Kindergarten.
About 3 thousand students are to cross the broken bridge every day risking their lives to attend those educational institutions. Some 16/17 days ago Tamim Shaikh, a student of Infant Class of Purbo Sayera Govt. Primary School was seriously injured when he fell into the river from the broken bridge at the time of crossing the same in order to attend to his class. Later the boy was rescued from the river and was admitted to a clinic for treatment. After the accident guardians are not willing to send their children to their educational institutions. BRAC (NGO) employee Aklima Begum of village Purbo Sayera told, I am to cross this broken bridge at least twice a day risking my life in order to discharge my official duties in the village Paschim Sayera.
In this area shrimps, lobsters and white fish are cultivated in large scales. Cultivated fish is mainly sold in Barakpur, Chaksree and Faltita wholesale markets. But due to the broken bridge the fish cultivators of the area are to cross 10/12 kilometer extra paths to go to those wholesale markets for selling their products.
The local people complained, the matter was brought to the notice of the concerned authorities. But it is a matter of great regret that no step was taken so far either to reconstruct it or to make any alternative arrangement so that people can cross the river.
